chicks vs older pullets

I prefer small chicks. Just for the fact that I can tame them. My 2 month old pullets have turned out to be extremely nice, even the skittish one loves human attention. I'm keeping them more as a pet then used for utility. Eggs are just a bonus. I have 5 more in the house ready to go outside. They too, are extremely friendly and follow me around. I have my kids and neighborhood kids in the coop and I do not need to worry of someone getting pecked.

I bought 8 chicks all different ages with the oldest being 3 weeks and the youngest 1 day old. I have not lost a chick. I use probios(probiotics) and vitamins in their water. The 2 month olds have shiny feathers. I will defiantly be buying small chicks again. The smaller, the better.

If your worried about losing chicks, buy a couple to a few extra.

I had planned to get pullets instead of chicks. In fact, I built a hen house with coop and run and didn't even consider having a brooder. Then I went to the poultry supply
store to check out feed prices and they 'just happened' to have five Buff Orpington two week old chicks. Guess how many chicks I had planned for. Guess what breed I wanted. Yep. I headed home
with 5 BO's in a cardboard vodka box in the back seat of my car.
There was no place to keep them at home except my outside coop or the vodka box, so I set up a clip-on light and ran 150 feet of extension cord, put in shavings and bingo, instant brooder.
After three nights of record setting cold (in the 40's, a record here) the weather warmed up to normal and the little dudettes made themselves at home, amongst the waterer, the feeder and several
little climb-on jump-off toys and a dirt bath. Now in their fourth week, they walk down their gangplank in the morning, scratch, peep, drink from the nipple waterer and chase about all day. They
are a hoot to watch. At night they walk back up their gangplank and actually roost. There have been no health issues of any kind.
Am I glad I didn't get pullets? You bet. Get the young guys. You want regret it.

everyone says raising chicks are harder and all these things can go wrong so what did i do got 13 day old rir 5 day old ee's 4 day old br and 2 guinea fowl there the most easiest thing to raise just give em heat clean water plenty of food and they do the rest wish raising my other animal babies was as easy

We got our 1st chickens ever, and even my husband has to agree that they have been one of the most enjoyable experiences we have had raising them for the last 6 1/2 weeks. We finally have them all out of the house now where we enjoy them in their coop. I would be very afraid of getting chickens from someone else or at a swap meet. I have found that many people will sell you their unwanted sick or problem chickens, or try to dump roosters on unsuspecting 1st timers. Be careful also if you buy chicks at a feed store--a lot of people end up with too many roosters. I got hatchery chicks and mine were sexed at birth--they are supposedly 90 % correct, so we didn't get many surprises.
