Hello. I am new to chicks/chickens. We have 6 chicks from Myer Hatchery (2 dominiques, 2 speckled sussex, 2 orpingtons) who will be 3 weeks old tomorrow.
Some chicks have been having loose, watery stools and I am concerned.
I don't know if they are ill and if so I don't know what to do.
They eat medicated chick feed. They have pine bedding which is changed twice a day. They take water with Vitapack in it. They haven't ever had any treats.

  • Dot, one of the speckled sussexes who has watery poo, is the largest and most developed of the flock.
  • Elena, the other speckled sussex who i've seen poo watery stuff, is probably one of the two late bloomers as far as development feathers, but a normal size.
  • Suzette, a dominique, I've seen void watery poo: she is midway in flock as to feather development but skinniest looking.
  • Fifi, the remaining dominique I've yet to actually catch pooing so I"m not sure what's coming out of her. She seems fine as far as behavior and development.
  • Pearl, blue orpington, poo is fine, she is well developed and feathered
  • Twinkle: buff orpington, poo is fine. she is the other late bloomer as far as feathers but seems quite fine. perhaps just a tad younger in hatch is my thought.

If this was a chinchilla I'd be thinking about offering a probiotic to the two chicks I know have had loose stools, and see if it assisted in getting her system back on track by itself.
Are probiotics something used in chicks?

How do I know when veterinary help is warranted?

What do I do right now?

I'd appreciate any info, suggestions, and hand holding!
Thank you
Katie

absolutely I use probotic in my flock and have used it since they were chicks and developed pasty butt. the probotic took care of the problem never to return again! as a matter of fact I was going to suggest a probotic . I personally like using Probios. you can order a jar for 12 dollars online. its been wonderful. you can get it at WWW.probios.com. it has several benifical bacteria in it that's great for the whole flock. I hope this helps. best wishes

You could save yourself a lot of money and just feed them some good yogurt. Fermented chick feed also is full of probiotics, which is made with chick feed, water, a tablespoonful of apple cider vinegar with mother, and stir it for 3-4 days. Keep adding feed and water to the container as you use it like sourdough starter, and keep it stirred.
