Today is hatch day,and to my disgrace, the mom somehow died after being 20 long days in the broody cage, she pooped and ate fine, and she left chicks, pls help I never used a heat lamp,I put a heat lamp and some old clothing to keep the heat in and that's what I have them in right now,one chick and 6 cracked eggs at this time.i don't have a thermometer but going to get one later, what temperature should they be?does the light have to be on at all times?

You want it around 95 the light needs to be on all the time. Just be careful because that is a fire hazard. Want to make sure it is secured good and nothing close to it. Of it's cold outside it would help if you bring the brooder inside.

Don't use cloth or blanket over your lamp it will catch on fire. Since your using a cardboard box, get another cardboard piece and cover half the box. Anchor your lamp, you can tie it up to a S hook to a wall.

I have gotten everything,I ended up buying some chicks from TSC,some broilers that will one day become lunch, another chick hatched,so 2 chicks and 4 eggs that are cracked, also what can I put in the little broder at night so predators can't get to the chicks at night but the light still being able to hit the chicks.

Looks like your trying to hatch some eggs in a pale, keep chicks and eggs separate. Get the eggs in an incubator, asap. You should keep the chicks indoors if you can, than no worries of predators, plus you can keep an eye on them incase they have an accident or get sick.

I wasn't planning this,I dont have an incubator, mom died for unknown reasons, and left the eggs, hoping they hatch, some of them have cracks in them.

I would say put them in a plastic container with a dish of water and a sponge in it and keep temps close to 99.5 degrees. They might hatch.

Best way to protect them would be to bring them indoors. If this isn't an option you could put chicken wire over the top and claps to hold it on. Each week you will want to decrease the heat by 5 degrees. I took the heater off at 4 weeks with my house temp at 70.
