Hey all!
I just got chicks for the first time today and im confused with the heat lamp
Situation. Everywhere I was reading said the checks need to have a heat lamp and the lady who I picked the chicks up from has raised many baby chicks in her lifetime so she just uses a 60 W bulb
So my question to you is if I’m using a light of any kind do I turn it off at night? Also the chicks are in my sunroom and my sunroom is very hot

The heat lamp is to provide heat which the babies need. Todays regular light bulbs don’t put off enough heat. I keep my heat lamp about a foot from the bottom of brooder. Leave room for them to be able to cool off if the get to warm.

Make sure they can move away or close as they deem fit to stay warm. I would hope this is obvious but remove anything that can burn away from the bulb, make sure the light is anchored and cannot move, and make sure the chicks cant break the bulb.

Isn't 250 watts a lot? It's been awhile since I raised chicks in the house but that seems hot.

I bought my heat lamp from Lowes, it uses regular 50, 75, 100W light bulbs. I also bought a dimmer switch outlet that come attached to a cord. I plug my heat lamp into the outlet and can adjust the light. I put a thermometer under the light and mark my dimmer switch when I get a steady 95F.

I watch my chick during the day to see if they are sleeping under the light. They usually start moving away from the center in about week, that when I start lowering the dimmer switch during the day, but bring it back up at night. After about 1 1/2 weeks I am at the low setting on the dimmer switch in the day, and about mid way during the night. I turn off the heat lamb a few days before I move them outside. But I live in the tropics, so it may be different for you.

The chicks can tell you in their own way. If every time you walk in the area they are as far from the bulb as they can be you have your answer. I used A dog crate and just lined the bottom to keep debris in.
