chicky behavior help please

Try offering grit in the palm of your hand (or any other treat, even chick kibble).  You can also take the feed away for a little while when you change the bedding, then offer it in your hand.  I find that if I move slowly, and keep my hand low and don't move it, the more adventuresome will come to check you out, and soon be followed by the others.  Let the chick step onto your hand, don't try to pick her up, then, when you get the adventurous one used to being on your hand, you can raise it a bit.  They love the feeling of superiority being able to look down their beaks at their peers.
thank you so much! That's great advice! I will get some chick or parakeet grit. :) and spend more time with then when I clean out the brooder. I like the idea of removing food and offering it in my hand. It must be scary to be picked up by the butt checking hand several times a day. I don't imagine I'd want to snuggle with it either. ;) wonderful ideas!

Thanks for the tips, Lazy! Yes, I am a bit quick when handling my chicks; perhaps I ought to slow down. I just want them to get used to me the way I am. They do love to perch on me, though, and they enjoy hanging out with me once they get over being picked up. They do love egg yolks too... Okay, so I guess I could build their little egos and let them come into my hand instead of forcing them. Patience. Yes. Patience.
