Chiggers and chickens.

Chiggers are in the same family as leg scale mites and they definitely cause trouble. Spraying down the floors of the coop and run, roost bars top and bottom, nest boxes too should help. And this will keep them off you too! Nothing more itchy than a chigger bite! :barnie

Up here, those are in several lakes for about a week in the summer. The DNR usually posts when and where they are so everyone stays out of the water. It's usually when algae blooms it seems.

When I read her post I had to look it up as obviously her chickens weren't swimming in a lake. ;)

Get a few guineas. Back in the sixties the old timers swore that they would wipe out the chiggers where they were allowed to free range. They make great guard animals too.
I have 6 guineas who are about 8 weeks old! They're still in the coop run because I dnt want my cats killing them. The ticks n chiggers here in AR are awful n I don't want to put chemicals down.

I have some fresh sand we got for a sandbox, I was wondering if that wld be good to put some in their nesting boxes? To keep chiggers down?

I've used sand in my nest boxes in the past, even the entire coop and run! So give it a try, it might help! Chiggers tend to like warm moist places, sand may help dry things out.
