Short answer to your question: No, you can't *consistently* believe both.

Long answer: Genesis one makes it abundantly clear that God created the universe in 6 *literal* days:

1) There are multiple genres in the Old Testement: historical narrative, poetry, and prophesy (which is usually poetic). Both in the original language it was written in (Hebrew) and in English it is usually obvious what genre is being used. The language in Genesis is 100% historical narrative. I can go into that more if you would like. Historical narrative is meant to be taken literally. If you read in your history book that George Washington was the first president, you wouldn't assume that it means he was the fourth president. (I'm being a bit hyperbolic to make my point.)

2) The Hebrew word used in Genesis 1 for day is "yom". Hebrew is a very poetic language and in many cases has different words for one English word. The word "yom" is used only in a literal sense. Therefore we should take that word in Genesis one as literal! There is no indication in the text that it should be taken otherwise.

3) The timeline of evolution and the timeline given in the Bible are totally different to illustrate this, I am going to borrow a chart from the creation ministry: Answers in Genesis.

The timelines are totally switched around.

4) Exodus 20:11 when talking about keeping the Sabbath day says: "For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day." Does this mean we are to work for some-odd millions of years and then rest for a million years? No. (BTW, the word for day here is "yom".)

5) If you are going to take Genesis 1 as not literal, you have destroyed the very foundation on which your whole system of beliefs are is built! The gospels are also historical narrative. If you are so willing to twist Genesis one and make it non-literal, you will have a hard time defending your beliefs that Jesus died and rose again.

I have much more I'd love to share, along with some resources, but I don't want to overload everyone. I love this topic and will happily continue on with it either here or in a group pm.

i honestly don't know why birb keeps bullying me and calling me names, just proves he rarely acts his age. oh and i know hes going to give a really almost hilariously bad come back
Okay.
Oh yea I'm the one that bullys you. Yea sure buddy 🙄
Please, birb, the point of not debating things on an open forum is so that it doesn't become heated or insulting. Stop insulting or I will ask for you to be removed from this conversation so that we can continue in peaceful discussion.
