"Alexis, but you can call me Alex. It saves you a whole syllable, plus I can walk away one second earlier," Alexis replied. She was joking about the second sentence, but there was some truth to it. People who were overly talkative and demanding of other's attention drove her crazy, and any shortcut she could offer to them in their conversation was advantageous to her as well.

Laurel compressed the vocal expression of her pain, but the longer the procedure continued the greater her attempts failed. Through her pain Laurel did not shed a single tear, since she had never learned to express herself in this way. Until this point only a few hushed moans escaped Laurel. When the pain began to remain the same and not increase she knew he was done with her.
