Zaine nodded, pleased with her reply. It wasn't often that he found someone who could understand his sometimes odd questions. He turned back to look at the painting. "It's a way of escape, is it not?" He said, having heard her last sentence.
Ava nodded "Foster care is not what the ads claim it to be. A lot are just in it for the paycheck, and the ones that aren't get taken off the rolls because they adopt the kids."
 
Donella ate her food and drank her milk silently as she watched the others. When she was done, she shifted and lay on her side beside Andorra just so she wouldn't have to speak to anyone else.
Andorra noticed her friend shift and felt honored that she stayed by her. She absently scratched behind her tiny cat's ear. Part in reassurance and part in easy friendship.

Donella purred at that, glad to have her pet her even as she listened to the other two argue.

"Then don't. There's no need to dwell on the past," Zaine said. Easier said than done, though. He was all too often thinking of his own past.
