Children and chicken chores? :o)

I had a rooster who popped both my boys, despite our best efforts. He now lives elsewhere. I have 4 roosters that are as calm as the day is long now.

There are far too many nice roosters out there to tolerate mean ones.

My 4 1/2 yr old likes to collect eggs but I go into the pens with him b/c I don't want to *find out* how far I can trust my roos. And at the first sign of them even looking at him funny, he wouldn't be going in there at all. You only get two eyeballs. I did let him in with the just-hens, alone, when we had a pen like that. Oh, and he helps name them. Hence the chantecler pullet named "Ladder" and stuff like that

The 1 1/2 year old is in charge of pointing and hooting at his beloved "tseeeekas!" and in the summer feeding them blades of grass thru the run mesh

Both have been taught not to try to feed your finger to a chicken, not to let a chicken's face near their face, and to wash their hands after chicken time.

I have a and 7 yr old and I am the Dad...they both have their own birds...older boy has bantam Shamos and the younger has bantam brahmas...they are incharge of their birds...with decisions being influenced by Dad...when I am gone to class they are feed everything for me...chickens, quail, pigeons, dogs, rats, mice...they help mixing feed especially the younger one...they help with butchering...not the best but they try...not real good at cleaning but we are working on that...the youngest drives a mean wagon and can dig a great hole (still trying to find a good use for this tallent...the holes are very wide and not real deep) they gather eggs especially from the coop that I built that I can't reach te eggs in...don't ask I thought I was skinny or something stupid...

Kids can pretty much do whatever you want them to do, from the time i could walk my dad would tell me to go feed/water the chickens, collect eggs, little stuff like that.. about the time i got old enough (7-8) to carry fairly heavy stuff me and him would build chicken pens together. Dad got rid of the chickens as he didn't like them anymore but i still find time to play/care for my feathered "Friends", build my own pens (Buy the supplies as well with the money i make, I tried to convince him to give me a allowance but he replied with 'allowances are for rich people' ), buy my own feed, raise my chickens, etc by myself.

Do not post your phone number or your age (especially if you are a minor)

Our 17 year old claims he wants his own chicken and show him/her, and then leaves the chore of caring for them to us. When his rooster got injured, it was I who nursed him back to health.
So now he doesn't get to have anything to do with them. We tell him he can have all the chickens or whatever other animal he wants after he moves out and has his own place. Right now he can't even keep his own room decent. Notice I didn't say "clean", that would be wayyyy too much to expect!!!
