My daughter is almost 9 and she has recently decided she wants to start showing chickens. What breeds would you recommend and discourage a kid from using?

There is no breed that's better or worse than other per se. However, for children banatms make a lot of sense as they are smaller & easier for small hands to control. For my money Modern Game Bantams are hard to beat for kids. They tend to be natural pets, that're very small for small hands & they're eye-catchers to boot. I've never known one to be aggressive & they consume relatively little feed. A bonus if you're paying the feed bill!
