Children trespassing

Smart move, SpeckledHen!

Since I do live in the city, one time, two young kids got off from school decided to climb ON top of my chain link fence to peek OVER my six and half foot tall privacy fence! I told them to get the heck off my fence and they took off! Now I can post all kinds of signs but it sure didn't stop them!

From then on, everyday they walk to and from my corner where the school bus comes, they never gave me any problems since then.

My dad works for a university here in Lubbock and they were building a golf course and it was right buy a little league ball park and they had kids all over the place and it wasn't safe b/c there was a 30' deep hole with pretty steep sides and there was some water in the hole and the sides and the bottom of the hole had clay in it so he had to go to the "press box'' and ask them to tell the kids to stay out AND if I rembeber right they han NO TRESSPASSING signs out!!!!

I think it would be a good investment to at least fence in the area where your chickens free-range. That way they'll be protected from stray dogs as well as stray children.

Find out what your local law enforcment and your own homeowner's insurance agencies advise to protect yourself from liability if a trespasser gets injured on your property.

Don't they sell fake video cameras at the store somewhere my brother had one put one up they look real. Put a sign "Your being watched" "will call cops" or something

Could always invest in an electric, single-strand fence.......

Post a sign about the fence. Can't do permanent damage but can sure jog a memory!

I'm in total agreement with Beekissed. A simple field wire fence on steel posts with a single strand of hot wire on top. You can use a solar charger. Post a sign every few posts "warning, electric fence" as well as your no trespassing signs. Unfortunately you are very liable in this situation and either fencing in the chickens or fencing out the kids is probably your best protection for yourself and the kids. People unfamiliar with chickens, especially kids, have no clue what a rooster can do. I would go with fencing to keep people off altogether rather then just fencing the chickens.

the problem is that most parents dont understand that farm animals - every cutesypootsey widdle chickiechickchicks can be dangerous, especially to children who are eye-high to a flying attack rooster.

if these kids are coming over from the ball field the problem isnt going away so its kinda on you to do something.

get field fence from TSC for about $150 and use tposts. you can get something up in an afternoon.

remember too that parents will think whatever their kids do is cute - until they get hurt then its YOUR fault, right?

and i was never afraid to be the crazy lady who yelled at the kids to get off my darn lawn when i lived in the city. and we did have to fence the side of our property facing our neighbors even out here in the country. the 4H kids thought they could just come tromping over whenever.

And I'm not liable if some idiot kid hits the hotwire?

Indulge me while I rant for a moment. Why should I have to spend thousands of dollars and install a fence that detracts from the beauty of my property just because some parents aren't doing their job???!!!!! There is already a fence around the baseball field. A big chain link fence with only openings for the road in. There is a road and a large swath of grass between where my chickens range and the ball field. MY animals stay in their yard on my property. WHY should I be the one penalized because someone hasn't taught their children to not go in other people's yards?!!

Okay, I'm done now. I do like kids. I just hate irresponsible parents.

It's going to look really ugly to fence the whole darn thing and quite frankly I can't afford it. The chickens don't get to free range as much as I'd like, but I can try to get the ball schedule and keep them put up. Sadly that means no ranging from March until July. Grrrr....
I'll try talking to the Ruritan group that runs the ball field. I don't want to be the witchy lady, but I also don't want a kid hurt or a lawsuit on my hands.

I hate ball season...

How much fence line would you have to put up? We put in field wire with hot wire on top very inexpensively. And the charge from these fences is just a good zap, it hurts yeah, but it's not going to kill or maim anybody. I think you can get low voltage chargers if I remember correctly. If you put up a wood fence or rails or something like that, they are just going to climb over it and it will be way more expensive, although pretty to look at. You would be wasteing your money. I know it really sucks to have to go to expense and time and to alter your property in a way you would prefer not to because of other people. But at the same time you are better off protecting yourself from idiots who I guarantee will sue you when little johnny gets cut open by a roo because they weren't watching him. A good fence should take care of the problem and you will be happier for it.
