my children are scaried to go around the chickens because the rooster has started challenging them. We've had him since he was a week old. Any suggestions on how we can teach him not to run after them?

Nope. A rooster that goes after kids is way too dangerous. If he were mine, he'd be in the stewpot. Sorry.

Roosters will go after your children's eyes when they are not expecting it. I would get rid of that roo so fast he wouldn't have time to cock-a-doodle-doo again on our property- rehome him I mean.

I have put one down before (hubby did it) who drew blood on my youngest child and then tried to kill me. It is an escalating behavior.

I think the worst thing you could do is challenge him. Let them hold a long stick and ignore him but if he gets with in the stick distance just hold it out to tell him to keep his distance.

If he is challenging them now, you've only a short time of probationary disciple, or he'd be the yellow in the stock pot by Sunday afternoon.

Frankly, he is more likely to get worse, as he matures, unless he learns very, very quickly. Do not keep a dangerous animal around children. Their quick motions and playful actions are mis-interpreted by instincts deep with rooster, some dogs, bulls, etc.

It would best to get rid of him in whatever way you feel right for you. I have had two aggressive roosters and I have found no amount of training in any form will stop one from going after children. They may stop for a short time, but they will always start attacking again sooner or later and when you don't expect it.

If you want a rooster I would search for someone that has a proven non-aggressive roo and get a male chick or cockerel from them. You also don't want to pass on those aggressive genes.

I agree with everyone. You need to keep him seperated from the kids in a pen or get rid of him, however you choose. IMO the kids safety comes first. I am fortunate enough to have not gone through that. Both of my roos are as sweet as can be. Good luck to you.

We had a silkie roo that we raised from day old. My five year old held it just about every day for five months. He was the sweetest thing ....then soon after he found his crow my daughter picked him up one day and he put an inch long scratch on her cheek. She was devastated and I was mortified. The roo also started running after my three year old and tried to flog her. I ran out one day to find her sitting, hands covering her face, screaming and crying. We found a new home for him the next day.
