Chin Swelling?

Well unfortunately Eleanor died :( I gave her Benadryl Friday and it seemed like it was helping with the redness and swelling of the bump and she was acting normal all weekend. I just went out there to check on her and she was dead. Still no idea what the bump was or how it killed her/how she died but I emailed the vet. Hopefully it’s not contagious.

Oh no, I am so sorry for your loss. How old was Eleanor? Was she vaccinated for Mareks disease? I have seen a picture once of a Mareks tumor in that region of the neck. If you could keep her body cold in a refrigerator or on ice in a cooler, you could take or ship her body overnight to the state vet for a necropsy to look for a cause of death. Many state vets will send a prepaid mailer for overnight shipping via Fedex or UPS, so no questions are asked about what is being shipped. Driving the body in is the least expensive and easiest. Here is a list of most state vets:

I am actually not sure if she was vaccinated against that particular disease. I got her from Murdoch’s (a local feed and supply store if you’re not familiar). The vet I take my dogs too actually sees chickens, I wonder if they do autopsies. She hatched around April 7th so not even four months, hadn’t even started laying.

Mareks is not that easy to diagnose, but the state vet pathologists are more familiar with looking for signs. Certain states have more affordable necropsies as well. Mareks testing is available if the necropsy shows any signs of the 4 types of Mareks. Here is a link showing a chicken with a Mareks tumor of the wattles:

Oh that does look similar… she wasn’t showing any signs though and she was so young! I wonder if that could have been it still.

At 5-25 weeks old Mareks symptoms can be common, and it can happen anytime if exposed and not vaccinated. It would be helpful to know what she may have had that killed her so young, just to ease your mind.
