Chinese Blue Breasted "Button Quail" Thread!!

Why is it so wrong to keep button quail in colonies? I keep mine like that for a variety of color and have absolutely no problem with them.

They are naturally in pairs, and they are very territorial. What works for you doesn't always work for the next guy. Plus there is feather picking and low fertility...

i havent had any feather picking and i dont know about fertility because i dont really have enough eggs to make it worth putting in the incubator

How many do you house together and in how much space?
i am SERIOUSLY surprised that you have "absolutely no problem with them".

Chinese Blue Breasted Quail are territorial and monogamous which means it is UNNATURAL for them to live in colonies ...which also means it is STRESSFUlL for them to live in colonies ....Which means it shortens their lives to live in colonies.... SOOOOOOOO....basically it's not mentally or physically healthy for CBBQ to live in colonies.

ALSO,just so you are aware...a lot of people frown upon the color mutations being mixed like that to get so much of a "variety of color"as you put it..
you asked....

Oh and One More thing...when you keep them all together like that HOW can you know if they are breeding brother /sister or mother /son or etc?

It's also that their colors are all mixed up and us breeders are trying to have colors breed true. House all you want but I house them right.

They are fine until they get sexually mature. Then they can tear each other to shreds. I have people calling me all the time "why are my buttons doing this, " or "one of the hens are dead..." They learn their lesson the hard way. I have too.

i hatched mine out all at once and they were going after each other by 5 weeks old.....and there was 1 more girl than boy so it wasn't a woman shortage either...

Just to make things clear housing them right is opinionated and I am fine with color mutations. And I keep 9 females with 3 males in a pen that is about 5 feet long and 3 feet wide. And they ALL have all of their feathers.
