Snakes get my vote as the number one predator of vermin. They can get into places the voles, mice, etc. hide in. The cat has to wait it out.

Very true. You do have to be lucky to have snakes though, cats you can just get right off a realtive's farm.

Probably a combination of both. Generally speaking, when our ancestors traveled to new countries/islands/lands, there was a small local extinction event in the ecyosystem. Generally this was a result of multiple things: mass hunting/poaching, habitat loss/destruction, loss of prey due to either humans hunting it or our domesticated animals hunting it, new diseases brought in via the domestic animals that spread to local wildlife... and so on.

Speaking as a flock owner, I'll take the cats at my own property over the hawks, bobcats, weasels, and owls any day.

It does make me sad to think of all the incredible species that went extinct that I will never be able to see.

I'm ignoring the last two because the NYT is notorious for AGW alarmist propaganda. They're really bald-faced liars.

The first paper is a study that doesn't prove anything and is big on assumption and conjecture. That's par for climate science. Put the words 'climate change' in any paper and it will probably get published. The group of academics in the video below write hoax papers and try to get them published in academic journals to show how corrupt the field has become. One paper was on 'dog rape culture' and another was about 'the conceptual penis' that causes climate change. Both got published in respected journals.
