The little suckers can be kind of intermittent in their chirping. When I have a broody hen about to hatch, I'll pull out an egg and give it a tap. Sometimes they talk back. Very cool experience. I used to be concerened about handling the eggs so close to hatch time, until I found the hen off the nest one afternoon and three of her eggs had already pipped. She got back on after about fifteen minutes and all the eggs she had under her that were fertile, hatched. I did an eggtopsy to check on the leftovers and the unhatched one had never developed at all. I never bother to candle the broodies eggs anymore. They seem to know what they are doing.
