Last year I got two chocolate Orps from a local breeder. They were accidentally mixed in with some other chicks I purchased. They happened to be a hen and a roo. I bred them this year and hatched out 6 eggs to see if they would breed true. 5 of the 6 are obviously chocolate. The 6th is the one that has me stumped. Any ideas? The attached pics are the day after hatch next to a chocolate sibling, and the other two are the current color. The lighter bird has since lightened up even more and the head is still dark.

Congratulations you got a Khaki which means your Chocolates are actually Duns.

That's so cool!
Congratulations~

The dun type chocolate works similar to BBS (blue black splash)

The two chocolates are so cool, and look so similar (I've never seen one in person, sadly)
Oh that makes sense!!! So chocolate would be like black, dun would be like blue, and khaki like splash? So instead of a BBS pen you could have a CDK pen 🤣 I apologize if I got that totally wrong!

Dun confuses me
I tried to look it up. I didn't find a chart (which makes it easier to visualize) but somewhere on here somebody did say that's how dun works.

It got even more confusing when people started talking about "platinum" which is khaki x blue or something? and my brain is not ready for this information.

>.>

The other chocolate is sex-linked.
Chocolate rooster x non-chocolate hen = all daughters chocolate, sons split to chocolate (so the sons don't look chocolate)

Almost got a chocolate cockerel for that reason. But opted to not, because some of my pullets were going to be small and I could only find orpingtons advertised as 10+lb

... more confusingly...sex-link chocolate can mix with blue.
Choc x blue = mauve
and you can also get a chocolate version of splash.

And I feel like I used to understand all of it but my brain is like "naaaaah not today I'm erasing it all"

I feel like that today too!! Lol I love that you were able to teach me some new things though, thank you so much!! I have never had a chocolate bird (sex link or otherwise) so if I ever do get one, I will have to do a deep dive. But until then I will probably just stay dumb about it 🤣
