I received some really heavy, almost brownie-like cake, that is somewhat unappetizing. Is chocolate okay for chickens? I thought I'd just toss it in the run like a treat until it's all gone. I cut it into chunks and froze it thinking I would mix it into pudding, but I really don't want to even do that. What are your thoughts? Thanks all.

I'm with most of the other-I wouldn't just to be safe(loads of sugar, I bet which is not good for them).

Chocolate is extremely toxic to animals. Do not feed it even in small amounts. It may not kill them immediately, but you're causing them damage little by little. Crackers and small pieces of bread make a much better treat. What is a good treat to us isn't necessarily a treat to them. Mine like bread, crackers, and corn flakes as treats. Just recently I've started feeding them more scraps from the refrigerator and they rewarded me with more eggs.

It is absolutely not true that chocolate is extremely toxic to animals. Some types of chocolate, those high in cocoa concentration, can be toxic to dogs in sufficient quantity. That in no may suggests that chocolate cke is toxic to chickens, it isn't. I work in a mental health program that serves lunch to clients. Often there are leftover items that the kitchen plans to throw out. I often take things home, including chocolate cake, and feed it to my chickens. While I wouldn't suggest feeding a diet consisting of only chocolate cake I'm confident that once in awhile it won't harm them.

ps-I have given my dog a bite of chocolate cake a few times & he seems pretty lively for a dead dog. He would be dead if it was toxic right?

I am with the minority here. Mine get bits of left over fudge poptarts, the last 3 brownies getting hard in the pan. extra chocolate chip waffles...... you get the idea. I am with oldtime, chocolate eggs would sure be something

So no I don't think it will hurt them. Moderation is the key!
