Chocolate Marans

Pics
It looks a bit like an extreme Black Copper to me. It will be interesting to see what happens as it feathers out but I imagine it will be black with a lot of leakage.
This is absolutely gorgeous!! Definitely post updates as you have them, please! View attachment 1739349

Well, as if I weren't already confused my this chick enough, lol. I'm leaning toward the lots of copper leakage and I'm guessing it must be a rooster. There is clearly some baring as well but still holding true to the chocolate coloring and it definitely hatched out of a Marans egg! lol, I will keep it for a few more weeks to be sure it's actually a roo... but if he is, he'll likely be finding a new home. I'm loving the vibrant copper tones though!

Why do you think its a cockerel.
Looks like a pullet to me.

I hope you're right! It's mostly the posturing compared to it's hatch mates but also all that extra copper I was assuming would lead to a roo. The comb is more pronounced and had more pink as well even though I realize that's not a reliable way to sex the chicks I was thinking the combination had me leaning toward roo. I'll know for sure in a few weeks!

I love that "ghost" barring. Using "ghost" in the way one would reference ghost flames in a car paintjob.

I agree the bird is a pullet and probably lacking the melanizers which is leading to copper leakage.

Well that's pretty exciting then because my daughter decided to name the chick after my Aunt and that would be a bit awkward if it ended up being a rooster! :lau Thanks everybody! I may post one more update in a few weeks of the coloring but I think it's pretty clear SHE is going to stay chocolate colored. :love

It's official...Pamela...is a rooster. :lau He's been crowing for a couple of weeks and I just snapped a shot today. He'll be rehomed next week but I ALMOST had my chocolate chicken with chocolate colored eggs. lol
