I believe Dun Sumatras are one of the only varieties of chicken in the US available to out cross to for the introduction of the gene.

Why mess with the dun gene?
Its a lot harder to find and it doesn't breed true.

Many colors don't breed true yet people keep breeding them, like everything else it's a compromise.

On a Positive note, by Breeding Dun-based Chocolate Orps he will end up with Khaki based Orps which should look superb too.
