One of my two roosters was crowing today and when I came upon him he was making a short hoarse noise repeatedly and was flopping on his side. His comb and wattles turned deep purple as he continued to roll and make this "gaking" noise.
He came over toward me as I moved to him. Gradually he slowed his noise and stopped. His beak was open for a moment and he gradually returned to his red color and steady strut. He has been fine the rest of today. He has struggled with the crowing thing and has always had a unique 'grumbling' tone to his clucking. Any Ideas?

How can all of these people view my post and have nothing to say ?? I am feeling really new and it is like I am trying to break into some little clique.

Sorry, it's not a clique thing (least I dont thing so). I just popped in cause i'd never heard of a rooster chocking problem and wanted to see what advice had been given. sorry but I'm at a loss, hope he's OK.

I also was looking just incade it ever happen to one of mine.Does he seem to eat and drink ok?

I'm wondering if he swallowed saliva down the "wrong pipe" while he was crowing? Is he still acting fine?
Check for gape worms (open his mouth up and look down his throat... they are long, red and skinny and will be pretty easy to spot... one sure sign would be if he "yawns" a lot) and if he doesn't have them, I'd almost bet it was a crowing mis-hap.
Let us know how he does. If he has gape worms, someone here can give you the correct treatment.

Thanks. It was a disturbing and frightening incident. Watching him get back in balance and his comb/wattles regain their bright red color was such a relief-I think i agree with CarriBrown- I feel like I witnessed "choking". I am glad I was there to witness it and who knows? Maybe my presence helped calm him or at least orient him. Thank you friends!
