My dad bought 12 young chukars yesterday and neither he or myself know much about them. He likes the way they sound, and thought it would be fun to raise some. Currently these birds, whick are about the size of his jumbo brown quail, are in a cage off the ground that is a 2 foot by 3 foot and 18 inches high. This cage is in his shed that he raises his quail in. He gave them game bird feed and fresh water, but that is about all we have done because we have never had these. How big do they get, when do they lay and how many eggs can be expected, how to sex them, how many in a cage at a time, what do they like to be content animals. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

I've never raised chukars before but I read that they are very aggressive towards one another when they are adults. Males and females look alike and it's difficult to tell them apart.

They will need a bigger pen soon.Yes they can be aggressive, even as young birds. The more room you give them the better and put lots of branches in their pen so they have multiple hiding places. The males will have a bigger spur then the hens and that is about the only way to sex them.Gamebird feed is good and you can also feed them veggies and fruit, wild bird seed, unsalted(NO SALT) shelled peanuts, millet and always have grit available for them.
