Chute, has anyone used one?

We are planning to connect a pen to our chicken coop by using an enclosed chute from the pop door to the pen. It will be 18 inches wide, 20 inches tall, and be covered in 1/2 hardware cloth. The floor will be a wooden ramp. Do you think this would work? The roof design of our coop will make building the pen tall enough for me to walk inside very difficult without connecting the two with a chute.

Sounds like a plan! I've seen a couple of those in the coop designs section, and they looked good and secure. Go for it!

I'm going to be doing the same thing from one of my playhouse to the run. Just be sure to make it sturdy so the raccoons can't pull it loose

Sounds good! I've seen a few folks use them here on BYC. And since it'll be mostly wire, the wood floor can easily be hosed off for cleanings. You might search "chicken tunnel" or your own heading's key words to find others who've done similar things. Good luck!

I have a 75' chicken tunnel. people who see it in action are so surprised to see my chickens go in one side of the yard, behind a hedge, and pop out the other end of the yard to a fenced pen. treats treats treats.

You will find that it works well. One thing to help cleaning: When I did my 4 walkboards for the chooks, I coated them heavilly with old motor oil and let them sit overnight before installing. To this day they are easy to hose off and look like they have a light color stain. They were pr treated deck boards, salvaged from a deck that was re-floored. The oil helps to seal them and prevent rot and to help keep poop

from sticking to them so bad. I also did the stoop going into the coop the same way and I just sweep the poop off easily when it rains.

It does not seem to stick.
