(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

We just rented a house that will allow us to have a few chickens. This will be our first time having chickens. We both grew up in the city, this is our first time living in the country.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

I have no chickens right now but intend on getting 2-4 in the next few months.

(3) What breeds do you have?

We are trying to figure out what breed of chicken to get. We want a family-friendly breed and are looking at starting with a pair of Silkies.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

That they can be family pets and also produce yummy free-range eggs.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Gardening, baking, and reading.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

We are a two-adult household with an indoor cat and a senior Australian Shephard. We are so excited to expand our household, me more so than my partner lol

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D
I have been a member of the BYC Facebook page for over a year to learn more about choosing and raising chickens.

Note: We are looking for any advice anyone would like to share when they first started raising chickens, especially those, like us, who had no experience.

Hello, Sarah, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
I would recommend something other than Silkies. You cannot get them sexed and the hens tend to be constantly broody.
Definitely avoid buying a pre-fab coop. They are generally a waste of money.

Welcome to BYC.
:yesss: We are glad you joined this flock!
Jump right in and make yourself at home.

Where about in the world do you live?
Don't buy a prefab coop..they are too small.
Build one that you can walk in.
Learn about chicken diseases.
Buy chicks from a major hatchery.

People sell sick birds...you do not want to have to be nursing/medicating birds all the time so be sure to triple check a seller before you buy...if not a major hatchery.

Welcome! We definitely had no experience at all with chickens. I got my first six chicks on March 8. I’ve learned tons from being here. Number one is getting your coop ready. There are lots of great ideas in the Coop Building thread. The most important part is making sure it is large enough.
