You should just jump right in. ;)

Glad you joined us. You found the right site if your interested in chickens. BYC is like the Library of Alexandria when it comes to chickens!
1. Don't bother with pre-fabricated coops, you can build better yourself even with no expertise.
2. Make the coop bigger than what you think you will need. (Chicken Math!)
3. Get more than 4 chickens. Depending on the breed, they could lay an egg per day (leghorns)or lay an egg per week, if your lucky.
AustralOrps and Buff Orpies lay pretty decent and are very family friendly usually. Sex links also lay ok.
Anyway, Welcome Home!
:welcome
Don't forget to research predator protection. ;)

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

We just rented a house that will allow us to have a few chickens. This will be our first time having chickens. We both grew up in the city, this is our first time living in the country.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

I have no chickens right now but intend on getting 2-4 in the next few months.

(3) What breeds do you have?

We are trying to figure out what breed of chicken to get. We want a family-friendly breed and are looking at starting with a pair of Silkies.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

That they can be family pets and also produce yummy free-range eggs.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Gardening, baking, and reading.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

We are a two-adult household with an indoor cat and a senior Australian Shephard. We are so excited to expand our household, me more so than my partner lol

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D
I have been a member of the BYC Facebook page for over a year to learn more about choosing and raising chickens.

Note: We are looking for any advice anyone would like to share when they first started raising chickens, especially those, like us, who had no experience.
Welcome.
A. have your coop ready first.
::Bracing for the flak:: You may want to consider an easy care bread for your first go at chickens. Trimming poop feathers might set your motivation back. Breeds I like, Buff Orphingtons, Speckled Sussex, Barred Rock, I love my Black Australorps, but they are terribly territorial with my other chickens, leghorns, ISA Browns I have seen are docile, but take care of them selves well. (Just my opinion, but a sincere one.)
