OK I have a kitchen question (play nice I'm from cali...

I've got a recipie for ham & beans that calls for a ham bone (I actually have one from a glazed ham that I saved in the freezer for this). It says to cook the beans in 8 cups of water for an hour, drain, rinse, and put beans in 6 cups of fresh water to begin the soup... but it doesn't say if I put the ham & bone into the first water or the second batch (Yes I get this should be obvious, but I've only reciently begun using beans that aren't canned).

Anyone wanna help out the city girl?

What I do is look my beans ( take a hand full, and check to make sure that there are no rocks or shriveled(sp) beans). I do about 2 cups. I wash them after that. Then I take my crock pot put the beans in with water, at that point I put what I want in, and cook on low until they are tender. If I turn them on in the am before work they are done by the time I come home. Put it in your second time. They are really good also with just chicken boulion in them. Then a nice pan of corn bread. I hope this helps.

That sounds like the 'quick soak' method. Beans should be soaked. I put them in 8 cups water, boil for a few minutes, turn them off. Let them sit in this water for at least an hour. Drain and rinse the soak water, refill the pan, and simmer the beans for a few hours. You can put the meat in after you rinse and soak the beans, otherwise all the flavor will go down the drain. You should simmer them a few hours until they are tender. You could also let them soak in water overnight, but I don't ever think that far ahead!

Yes on the quick soak method, ok I think I can take it from there.

Now biscuts... that's what bisquick makes right?

Yes, but why do you want biscuits with soup beans?? You need cornbread girl!!

I'm thinking dried peas and lentils are the same thing, little green or yellow peas that need like 45 minutes to cook thru? If so I've made tofu lentil loaf with them (enough BBQ sauce it's edible)?
