Guess you have never been in a flood zone then? Quite common building a wall around rivers if you need to protect the rest of the residential zones. Sort of like culling the sick,lame,weak chickens... it needs to be done or the whole flock suffers. Just because you're more vocal/aggressive... does not make you right. Just means you're next to the chopping block.

Sure that can work large scale, say you're limited to a 2 acre plot, you going to reduce your capacity on said land by 30% just so you can store more water in said.. channel or are you going to raise just 5% with...sand bags followed by a hugalkulture method to encourage root and vegetative growth to make a more natural solid wall. Soldiers are not designed to be thinkers... especially the Army. That would be Navy/Airforce/Spaceforce... My wife was in the army, national guard as well. She would also agree with my assessment. Although lol she isnt a uhh "fancy name for a ditch digger". Her MOS was MP.

Okay, first I agree much to disrespectful to continue as is. As such; I will divert the conversation... Just because you change the plane from vertical to horizontal (for erosion)... Do you have any actual source that erosion is "more limited" by going horizontal instead of forcing erosion to dig deeper (not wider) Horizontal erosion vs Vertical? I really am curious so... i will hand you the win if you provide such and I will step down and apologize.
I'm not competing for a win so I'm happy to talk about what the Army Corp of Engineers has done here (who I defended because my best friend's husband is a Civil Engineer who manages projects worldwide and I very much respect and appreciate what they do.) To your point about Vertical and Horizontal, they have dredged Vertical and Horizontal to create a straight channel, this 56 mile tributary of the Columbia.

We agree because I don't know either. I know this is working in my lifetime because I met a very old gent out walking the river's edge that he walks every spring to see what's changed. He told me that the river flooded and ran right through my yard in the 60's. Then the USACE came in and did the straight channel. So far so good but you can bet I have flood insurance! Your question about backup proof that it's a good solution is such a good one I'm going to ask my friend next time I see him. I'm now very curious too. Thanks.
Thank you, I honestly THINK both would work at the very least equally as well as the other. My only concern is um...intentions. Say you're federal government right, you want to limit the land the small guy has to work with so they're reliant on you. You build it wide, right? less land they can work with so they have to pay more in taxes. BUT If you dig straight down, instead of to the side... you store larger amounts of water and keep more sun ready plains ready for farming.
