I don't have near the experience that a lot on this forum have, but it seems that certain breeds always get mentioned as being docile and friendly. As CherryChick said, EE's seem to be people friendly (with the green egg bonus). I've had good luck with them. Right now I have a batch of month old chicks that include Buff Orpingtons, Australorps, EEs, Anconas, Delawares, black stars, and red stars. I don't spend as much time with them as I'd like and they are all a little jittery for a little while when I first see them and then they calm right down. With the exception of the Anconas - mine are totally spastic and act as if I'm coming after them with a cleaver!

Wyandottes are also good! Not only are they great with cold weather, but they come in a beautiful variety of colors... one thing I dont like about my white leghorns is that they are simply... white. EE are also good. Turkens, Orpington, Marans, Barred Rock... if youre going to get chickens, you may as well get pretty ones, aye? All these breeds are also docile, sweet, and mothering.

My Buff Orpington, Buffy, is the sweetest of my flock of four. All are very friendly to me - when they think I have food and mix well with the dogs, cats and ducks. Roxie is a Barred Rock, and Prudy and Penny are Rhode Island Reds - though rather poor examples compared to the chickens on this forum!

Once you figure out what you want, acquire them from a great breeder.

I find that all my Wyandottes are MEAN. Even ones I've sold to other people end up being "the mean one" of the flock. They are hardy and great layers but crabby patties to the last.

from Florida!

I have personally always had good luck with non hatchery chicks... Every hatchery chick we have gotten is less tame and more "flighty" despite the breeds demeanor description!
The best chickens we have are ones we purchased as chicks from someones Backyard- Go figure lol

Good luck to you in starting a flock- I hope to see some pics of your new additions soon
