Today, I opened the duck shelter and everyone poured out, except Claire. She was one of my Indian runners, and she had always walked funny, just on her tip toes, like she couldn't put her "heels" on the ground. Yesterday, she was having trouble on the ice, but so was everyone else, including me. I picked her up when she couldn't get her footing and moved her over with the rest of the flock.
I have no idea what happened, but she will be missed. She and Grace Kelly were inseparable, acquired from my breeder at the same time a couple of years ago because the hen-to-drake ratio needed improvement. Claire was pure white, and Grace Kelly is black with white "pearls" around her neck, so they were the perfect pair of opposites.
Claire was my water baby. She was always the first one in the pool and the last one out. She also had a great set of lungs and loved to express herself loudly. It's too cold to bury her so I put her in the freezer and will take care of her in the spring.
I hate it when someone dies, and I have no idea what happened or if there was anything I could do.
