What type of long term breeding system do y’all use to ensure high quality/ pure breeds? I am about to get a batch of chickens that I’d like to continue their line.

I didn’t specify well. I meant more so what is your method to creating your own line of pure breed/SOP/healthy chickens
I don't breed towards SOP. But mainly, I just remove unhealthynones or ones that grossly go against how the breed should look (like a short tail pheonix that popped up. He won't be around for breeding)

I'm just getting started with my breed of choice, but will be using a clan or spiral breeding system with them. I have 3 pens planned, pullets will stay in the pen they hatched from and cockerels rotate to the next pen over for breeding. Only the best will be put forward in either case, of course! I decided on this system because the birds I am working with are relatively difficult to find and I wanted to make sure I could sustain them for a long, long time with the birds I have to start with. 🙂

What breed are you working with? How many hens and roosters?

Silkied Cochin bantams. The breed is abundant, but the variety is pretty rare. I absolutely fell in love with them, though, and want to make sure they are preserved unlike several other silkied varieties of other breeds that have fallen into complete obscurity. I have 5 hens and 5 pullets that I've selected for breeding, and 2 cocks (and one of 2 cockerels yet to be decided between) to put over them to make three breeding pens of one male to 3-4 females. 🙂

This is similar to my story as well! I’m buying 8 light Brahmas and 12 Cochin bantams. I believe y’all share the same dad. No idea my starting plans so I’ll have to check out spiral. I know it’s frowned upon in line breeding to breed siblings. I’m thinking I’ll have to get another rooster for each.
