Pasochicken, good to see you in here after years of absence!
Whatever decision you make, it is yours alone along with your spouse if one needs to be committed 100 percent.
Nope, not cut out to be a trucker, neither is hubby....too over paranoid on roads...nothing worse having an overcautious driver.
Not ALL trucking companies are created equal.......some are more recepetive and others are hard nosed about things.
My sister's FIL is an independent trucker since he got laid off from Firestone and been on the road since then. He loves it even there are some bad times and good times but overall, he would not trade anything for his position. Yes you have to have alot of $$$$$$ to get going and get there the best route, gas saving and less time getting from Illinois to California. He would be home every other weekends.
Hiya EWE! Yep, been amongst the missing here at the BYC for nearly 2 years... ! Had to laugh when I saw the header under my "name" as "Just Hatched"!!! Which you and I know being the dinosuar I am is anything but! Shoulda said Born Again!
And you know I would be your best freind in telling your hubby and you to take a hike and not give you the keys to go drive a truck as much as that $1000 recruiting money looks good that I could give yous to get him hired on. And God knows I could use the $1000 kick back my company would pay me to do so but if he ever changed his mind and decided to beg and plead me for the job... Id still tell ya where to go in a heartbeat and that would not be trucking! Lumping maybe, but trucking??? GOD FORBID!
And not to be unkind, but I for one really resent it when someone says and lumps all recruiters into one mold.
Further, These larger companies are on contracts with the federal gov't. They get paid for offering training and putting people to work . So yes, they will take just about anyone with a CDL and a pulse. I've had those people on my truck. I know for a fact once they hire a newbie on for employment, they will do anything to keep them. And so those morons do end up on the road. Anyone who spends 5 minutes of their life driving anywhere in this counrty will know there are bad truck drivers out there just like there are bad 4 wheelers. I have met bad company as well as OO drivers. They obviously are being employed by someone
Oh and the cowboy in the pic is my husband. He doesn't drive. I do.
My apologies for the identity crisis..! Thought you were him!
Trying to organize/reorganize my thoughts here so as not to offend anyone.... first off. If anyone lets a moron in their truck to get them hired then they are guilty of putting a bad driver on the road should he/she said moron get hired. Your right the larger companies are on contracts with the government. They put more people to work than a college though and clear the field when it comes to drivers fresh out of school. And yes, your right, there are a lot of morons that slip through and do get hired and there are a lot of those same morons that would not last 5 minutes on the road if they did. I dont know what company you were/are working for and really dont care to know who that was or is so desperate to do anything to keep just anyone with a pulse because doing just that would be totally ridiculous. They would have blood on their hands. And granted, some may. Fact is and right now the government law is forcing ALL the big companies to kick those moron drivers/companies off the road before they start and they are guilty of pumping up unemployment.
Bad enough we gotta deal with a government so full of morons that most dont know zero from zero on anything anyway.
Happy to say, the good companies>>> they dont want smokers, dopers, drunks, overweights (as in drivers, not trucks) and idiots and if you fall in one of those slots, they are taking measures to reform you. The problem is is the system is so corrupt now they dont know where to start. So it starts by good recruiters. And yes, there are bad recruiters and making bad companies as well as bad OO's. Those companies are struggling really hard to get their drivers runs and the big companies with the runs, they got more drivers than they got trucks to drive them. Thats how they keep their big wheels turning and their company afloat.
Incidently, and for what its worth, where I come from in the occupations that abound here, we have virtually have two or three choices of jobs.. You either drive a truck, farm or you work for the hospital. To farm you need a second job and the hospital would not take us because my husband was over qualified in doing surgery because he uses a chainsaw. Having driven the truck, and still driving, driving is making going into ministering in the future a real good idea for an occupation.. whooo, EWE,
ever think this chicken hauler would ever say that?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RED HEN SAID:
Yeah..i've already decided that he wont be going over the road trucking..
He doest want to anyways... He's already said that several times.
Its just not worth it to me to be seperated from my husband.... has to do with you only have one life, thats it......and its short. I dont intend to be seperated from my husband for the short years we have left together. Nothing can ever, ever pay me enough to buy those years away from him.
You guys are a couple that sing to my heart. You dont want him to and he does not want to. So then dont! No loving couple wants to be seperated. Being physically seperated is one thing, being spiritually seperated is a disaster. And your right, you cant "buy" those years back. But you better be making good on what little time ya'll may have left.
Both my husband and I hate the trucking job, but we do love each other. The long hours of not seeing each other, holding on and such, but there aint know way in hell that its gonna ruin us spiritually and destroy our marriage. You have to have your priorties straight and like EWE said, "whatever the decision, you make it, its yours alone along with your spouse." MY take is in the end, WHO are you gonna have to reckon with. I have only one Master and he is not my husband nor any employer. But then thats me. A lot of folks will not bone to that. So with that said.. the field is clear. Your life is in your hands.
You can find a school that is only 14 day slong. DOT only requires 140 hours of schooling. SOme of these places really rip people loff by telling them they ahve to go for ever and ever and pay a ton of money for it. you do not. Shop around. There are decent schools that get you in and out without all the other crap.
14 days divided into 8 hours a day traing in them 14 days =112... A-HEM.. DOT requires 140 hours of schooling...I would hate to be going to a college and fall that short. Yep, they wil take your money alright and they are dang good at it. You do not get to count your time that you are doing homework as training.. its classroom training, be hind the wheel, skid pad they are talking and time with a TE. Colleges do not get you time with a TE unless you know one. And I will give you another. Some TE's aint worth a hoot and that is why the companies that offer training want you to sign in for a one to two year contract. They want people that are commited and not another donkey driver with a CDL tatooed on its tail. Driving a truck is commitment and if you dont have regard for safety, dont knock on a recruiters door.
Pardon me too, the schools dont get you in and out. You make your way. Statiscally speaking.. .1 in 50 potentials might end up with a license. If you have a license, that dont mean you have a job. 1 in 50 newbs after 2 years might still be working.. the rest are not, but then thats with a reputable company and a driver whos got what it takes to stick it out. Been there seen it. If you get through 2 years unscathed... you might then say, you got some experience. YOu might even be able to then call yourself a professional otherwise you just might be another donkey with a CDL tatooed on its tail spinning wheels.
Your right, you dont HAVE to do anything, you can bail on your contracts and lose all the money you want to, starve the kids and so forth.... But you start doing that while your in school, those that do that generally do not go any further to go driving a truck and feeding the kids and end up bankrupt. My company calls Drivers School, boot camp. When you graduate you get a pair of boots....if not, you get the boot. 112 hours of training in a college is the most costly thing you could end up doing if you cant get the 140 required. Colleges also do not offer you the option of extra time with a TE once you are through with 14 days. DOT says 140 days or nothing.
Even if you get in and make money, feeding the kids is not easy because your take home pay with all the taxes and expenses OO/or not can still eat you and it could very well be that you might be making $50,000 on the year end paper but you were better off making less at McDonalds in the long run..because it could end up your take home pay hauling your chicken barely gets you home.
And your right, there are some decent schools. Never said they weren't, but a fish out of those decent schools is not gonna get hired with a good reputable company without EXPERIENCE. The small companies cannot afford to hire those people if they got any sense either since they aint big enough to absorb the losses or the insurance incase of an accident and that fact is becoming more apparent to them. So when we start talking crap here you best be looking at how you want to jeoprodize your life when you go driving a truck and who gets the toys at the end of the game. Driving a garbage truck, grain truck or any big truck... $ per mile vs $ per hour is not the same, but the risk is and most driving for $ per hour dont often hold jobs too long. They eventually do stupid and the lil company says move on. They can easily get someone else for less pay to start and then your head is on their chopping block and they give a rats tater about experience. Experience then starts to cost them because the skilled artful drivers are demanding. Dont kid yourself, life today is designed where you aint taking it with you one way or the other and it will barely get you home no matter who your working for or how much you make.
If those morons coming into a big company persist to be morons, they are not gonna last long when it gets down to it with any reputable company. The problem is its just too bad that those that are are the ones that usualy trash a truck and maybe take a life with it. Every time I go to the terminal there are vagrants standing on the corner of the trucking companies and for the longest time I was asking myself WHY? Why dont they jsut walk a few more yards and knock on nextdoor....then it dawned on me.. they were canned truckers trying to get home. I drive pass many and they are with a cardboard sign begging gimme work and you just know they are ex-drivers that could not stay on the road. They are out of a trucking job walking home. And I see them weekly. And now they are jobless and McD's will not hire them either.
And bottomline - EVERY TRUCKING company out there can be real donkeyhinnies to work for. There are a lot of companies that would chew your rearend off for those black ice incidents even with the so called tag of nonpreventable. Just how did they determine yours was nonpreventable? Some people dont know what the real meaning of what nonpreventable is and if you work for a big company, you will get a big eyeopener on that one. If you see that bridge down the road in cold weather and you better darn well know ice forms on it before you get there and if your not slowing down sensible.. yep, its gonna end up, not preventable. And I dont care what you drive.
Not seeing it in the blinding snow is another thing. And drivng in a blizzard is just down right stupidity to start with. Being so desperate for money is no excuse to take a life, especially your own. Well anyway, its your DOT record.. no one elses. If the company is so willing to keep you on.. its their risk.. They better know where and how to cut it.
Whatever the reason you do do this job, its your conscience. Like I said you put a moron in your truck...thats your fault. You keep doing this job and start acting like a moron, then its time to take a hike.
You do this job long enough, sooner or later something bad and really stupid is gonna happen. One of the recruiters main questions is is what is the most traumatic thing that has ever happened in their life?
The most common answer is DIVORCE, or maybe VietNam, Iraq... they run close. But DIVORCE is the main line. Losing a loved one is another runner up.
As much as we would like that $1000 recruiters fee we would get for signing someone on, I am not giving that $1000 sign in bonus to just anyone with a pulse for the love of money and Lord knows I could get rich doing it if the job was supposed to be for hiring morons. But its not gonna work for us. And I realllly have to wonder about those ones that say they really love this job. There ain't nothing, not one dang thing to love about it. Like I said, I resent it when anyone says the recruiters will say anything just to get someone hired with a pulse. Hellooo.. Im not just any recruiter and I could be your worst nightmare when someone asks me to get them hired and then YOU put my reputation on the line later on.
So why are you drivng and him not?
Our company supports their drivers too. When you come back from leave if your gone more than three days, that is if you get through all the BS occupational health has to offer and DOT/DAC takes you through getting you back into a truck still takes time if your a company driver and your sitting there with no pay while you wait to get your ride. Meanwhile back at the ranch you could be losing the shirt off your back waiting weeks for a callback if you have not already lost it all and even if you are a good driver. Im glad our companies first caring thing they are gonna do is tell you to do is pee in a bottle and send it to the lab the first day your back even if your doctor says your good to go. The small companies often times overlook that part and well, need I say more for the morons they are hiring or letting drive for them, no less the ones running them. They are ruining there own reputations and dont need any help in doing that.
Another thing once this electronic logging stuff is in full force those little guys are gonna be in a big world of hurt. If your not working for a good reputable company, that totally is your own fault for putting your foot in the door. We get independants knocking all the time that are not electronic and going oh my word.
You also said...
lets not sugar coat it. Basically the only offence that will keep an experienced driver from being hired is a load/truck abandonment.
Im not gonna sugar coat this.. but that what you said there is a blatant lie. While doing just that, THAT is far from the only thing unlawful offense or other wise that will keep an experienced driver off the road. DOT has got you on a point system that could chew some drivers right into the unemployment line faster than you can blink and some will never be able to go back. And granted, getting a DOT roadside check does not happen on a given basis for all drivers.. come a time, your experience and your petty offense record is gonna tally up on you and you are gonna get WHAMMED with all the little infractions catching up on you that is if you are collecting any. Oh, it might be just a few points today.. but.. tomorrow...its a new ball game.
The days of running multiple comic books are ending so dont try kidding other people by saying that is what can be done. It should not be done and those doing it are putting lives further in jeoprody. There are gonna be a lot of companies laying on the curb idle in the not too distant future if they are still trying to get away with that and those small long haul companies doing it right now are running scared. If you are thinking of getting hired with them.. think on this that you might not be with them for too long once the Feds get on their books fo r nt having electronic logging. And at the same time then think long and hard if your fresh out of college teaching comic books on paper.. .. that $5000 or whatever the case you just spent going to school and you did it on a loan and you get whammed, that is gonna hurt. Again.. there you go being an independent if you want to drive a truck, and if you aint got the green to be independant hellooooooo curb.
Right now the federal governments agenda goal is to drive the independents and mom and pops out the door and they are doing a fine job of it. Bottom line, they dont want no mom and pops in any occupation. Isnt socialism gonna be fun?
If you dont want to mess with logs.. stay local, get paid by the hour and not the mile. Not sure how long that is even going to last if the government decides they are gonna dip in there too though and chances are they will eventually as they want to take more control of all of our lives.
Right now that sheet metal job looks better and better with each passing mile. For that matter.. pulling weeds for some poor farmer or going in to ministry full time looks like a thrill. Working for McD's is iffy.
Im glad you survived your accident. Eons ago I rolled a vehicle too and I so know a little about
what its like. FULL Recovery takes different lengths of time for everyone. Have not had a night terror of mine in decades, hate them dang things.. they can come anytime and being stressed can set them off. And I am not talking what most folks have that is called a nightmare. Night terrors are a total different thing. A nite terror is more than freaky.....but some do suffer from them and for decades can get them from a trauma such as these and long after. Waking up soaking wet in sweat and wondering why is a very intense situation.
You might be chomping at the bit to drive again, but sister, let me tell you, your ride from that little slip on the black ice is not over. While God may have been with you that day to see that you survived....do you have a grip on his hand right now or are ya peeved there for puttting you through it? For some people an accident like that has them yelling out to GOD reaching high and migthy.. where others are hollering at him going oh Crap and they are going to hell literally and figuratively....if I can be perfectly frank. One way or the other He is gonna deal with you. Its Jesus on the Mainline hon. On the 18th they may say and you may say your body is good to go.. but ask your self.. is it really? Because, I tell you what, you are at a most critical time when you could be putting more lives at risk getting back to driving than you care to think about and I am being honest with you. And I can see you searching.
Now EWE, long as I got you here... whats going on with those welsummers.. you got my other email... keep it private. I dont need any crazy lurkers boinking me for a job even though I could probably get them hired to one. Did you get that music I was telling you about!! Mercy! I can picture that sweet young-in of yours raising holy hands and dancing around in joyous happiness
and going oh yeah Amen Sista!! if not... go here www.jsm.org click listen or watch if that aint better than "Driving My Life Away," Or the Higway to Hell, I dont know what is!
This has been the ponderings and ramblings of a professional truckers wife.
Oh yeah.. AND!....
I guess I can say too, well HEY THERE all you BYCERS!! Im BAAAACK! Man this forum has changed.. its so much more purdy now~! I LIKE IT I LIKE IT!!! Kudos to the admins!
I have a Class A CDL with TX endorsments meaning i can drive any combination of tractor trailer, with air brakes and anything over 10,001lbs the TX portion means i can haul: doubles-tripples, tank, Hazmat, Hazmat is very sought after when it comes to employers, but now you have to pass a federal backround check along w/ fingprinting. some guys let it lapse cuz they didnt wanna jump through those hoops. last year i was 1 of 3 ppl who had a Hazmat and it got me a bunch more hours because of that. I live and work in Ak the wages here are generally higher than down in "America" haha sorry things are way diff up here. anyway starting out i was makin 16/hr workin for a freight company, that was with no exp just having the liscence to learn is what i call it. so now it's been like 5yrs and i do road construction for a NON-union outfit. we do alot of State/Fed jobs so the wages are what they call "Davis Bacon" wages meaning it's equivilent to union wages + we get fringe benefits cuz we are NON-union so most days im makin like 38/hr and thats like minimun 60hr/wk. i also have a TWIC card and HAZWOPER that get me into refineries and ports of secure entry that the USCG thinks are sensative. Ive done OTR (over the road) truckin outta Kansas City, Mo, it was ok but kinda slow, ive never sat on my ass that much EVER! Got to see alot of country....I dont know to many ppl who have drove Semi to New Foundland, Canada. It was alot like Ak in some ways they even had Moose....they were alot smaller than the Alaskan Moose. So with that said, you can do alright for yourself if you get the right job. your gonna have to take a crap job at first if no one wants to let you learn on there equipment. last summer i made +40K in 5months.......the rest of the year i can just chill and wait for the snow to melt.
Pasochicken, dd is dancing all right! LOL! She loves all the Christmas songs and religious songs....even sang some of it at school when her blue mood strikes her. She has ADD, just recently diagnosed. Poor girl, she has been thru the wringer and back!
Back to your trucking comments. I love the pictures of trucker's going down the road taking random pictures of the countryside. Little we know the hard work that the drivers do just to get a beautiful shot.
.I dont know to many ppl who have drove Semi to New Foundland, Canada.
Canada.. oh yes... the companies way of making you or breaking you! Well that is if your a newb and inexperienced. Not NF but Quebec...French speaking territory and if your a Yank.. talk about speaking in tongues.
The hub does not go out of the country anymore. Said sitting at the border crossing for 5 plus
hours waiting on them to rifle through your load was a royal pain. Not so much leaving the country, but coming back home.. if you dont have your paperwork picture perfect you are in for more delays.
Dont know if the highway border crossings are getting as obnoxious as getting molested by the TSA
at an airport but that kind of searching all the knooks and fanny crannies probably is coming. They just cant stop at an xray can they? Do not get me going on this.
Like an xray a day is healthy if your a regular BCr.
Winter driving.. snow 30 foot piles and tailswing on a corner hitting them.. a really joy.
After they turned to Passports he said forget it. Heard that one cost $100 and that was not including the mug shot. We are so glad the company gave the kids the option to opt out. Personally they should have stuck to birthcertificates, it was a helluva lot easier, but then some people dont want to have one. Now I have a dumb question.. dont you need a birthcertificate to get a passport? Or for that matter a green card? As I recall when he got hired he had to have a birthcertificate even though border crossing was not part of his job description at the time.
Moose, deer, bear, cats....you basic highway unavoidable highway
hazards.... and they come in paks more often than down south.
Large companies take you through the fingerprint and bonding too.. so whats the big deal?
Pasochicken, dd is dancing all right! LOL! She loves all the Christmas songs and religious songs....even sang some of it at school when her blue mood strikes her. She has ADD, just recently diagnosed. Poor girl, she has been thru the wringer and back
That pic is Effingham, Illinois...you can see the highway in the background. That highway is so beatiful in that stretch. Hub said back in December though, whoooo doggies it was nasty in that winter snow, no one should have been on the road. He saw a lot of DUMB accidents that weekend. Like he says, if the weather is so bad and you are grabbing for the tire chains.. its time to park it. Aint no load, no family, no dollar worth risking your life extra for. Better to be poor and alive.
Awww EWE the dd, she will be ok... just keep her focused on that prescription for good music that I gave ya! Christmas may come and go, but the other will still be playing like Christmas all year and I thnk she will love that. We are gonna cure that ADD.
So ya think I take good potshots driving eh! Snickerzs!!!!!!
Guess a pic says more than a thousand words...!
Some how we-ins is gonna get thru that nasty mess too. O, bummer!
Hey did I tell you about my new little Brother Donnie? Hes the son my dear mother never new she had..... His daddy is a cousin of Jerry Lee! Ya know, the Jerry Lee of Great Balls of Fire fame......
Well anyway my lil brother Donnie, what a guy!! Now theres a brother that really knows how to drive it to the house! I think your other half would take a liking to him!
Catch ya on the flip flop love, I gotta go tend to the rest of the congregation.. my kids are eating me out of house and home., I gotta get eats and wanna curl up with THEgood book.
That particular cross does not have an elevator, but the fella
it stands for is what will get you upstairs!
They are popping up all over.. there are 5 that we know of each a little different than the others, but the same builder that made this particular one designed the one in Groom, TX. Effingham has a lovely chapel.. They have a short lil video they show on how they built it. Its incredible. This particular cross has beautiful stone markers surrounding it with the Ten Commandments around its base. Lovely grounds and just beautiful and peaceful.
There is one in Tennesse, and Im trying to think on the other locations... my memory slips me. Oddly, the one in Tennessee is stationed nearby one of those trash adult on the highway bookstores.....Id say the message just in its location to such is in itself an inspiration telling us of choice.
tells all about that one in my photo. It stands a 198 foot tall and is at the intersection of Interstates 57 & 70 in Effingham, Illinois. This Cross there is intended to serve as a beacon of hope to the 50,000 travelers estimated to pass the site each day. Its illuminated at night an if you are not aware of its location it appears suddenly on the horizon and is an beauty to behold. That is church for an over the road trucker...as he passes by. Pretty big congregation if ya ask me.
Most people dont realize this, but a lot of those driving semis, those men and women driving are not just truckers... some are evangalists. Like I said, their favorite book is not a road map and it sure the heck is not porn.
Here is the one in Tennessee...

Luke 14:23
And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.
Luke 14:22-24 (in Context) Luke 14 (Whole Chapter)
Matthew 22:10
So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests.
Matthew 22:9-11 (in Context) Matthew 22 (Whole Chapter)
The day I had my rollover was the day I met both the devil and God in the twinkling of an eye... Thank God, God is bigger. And praise God, I am blessed.

scbatz33, know you are being prayed for. What you have been through and what you are going through is not easy. Your not alone in your situation.

This has been the ponderings and ramblings of a professional truckers wife and life at home and away.
