Class offering chicks in San Fran, what do you think?

After reading through Storey's Guide, I knew they weren't being accurate with egg amounts... Anything to lure customers, aye?

So, does the time of year for this class seem an ok time to start with chicks? I recall reading in Storey's that said chickens raised through summer produce less eggs. Is this true? Should I get them sooner, or wait until fall/winter?
