Classroom Hatch project - Day 20... 12/17

Oh, Cowboy - hope it's not as bad as you think it might be - hopefully you'll still get at least a couple chicks!

I'm really surprised the school bator has done so well. I did get the temps well regulated here at home first, but it's been holding temp really well, and basically has just been left alone for 2 wks.

I haven't worried too much about humidity so far, and with the auto turner, the lid has stayed closed, which is probably helping a lot.

I set the majority of the eggs at home, so as to 'hedge my bets' that we'd get at least a few chicks out of the bunch of eggs incase the school bator didn't work out.

So far, the school bator is at 100% viable eggs, where as 3 of the home bator eggs have been tossed so far.

Anyway, I'll keep you all posted....

Gosh, I wish my teacher had done something like that, but all we got to do is "surgery" on frogs. I skipped class that day.

Picked up the bator and brought it home today. Got a really good look at the 10 eggs in there and all 10 are looking really great! I can't get over how well the 'school model' cooler bator has worked so far!

I think I have two more quitters in the other bator, which brings us down to 24 eggs total. I think ALL but one of Lisa's eggs are still looking good - 4 of the 5 I've removed were from the BOs I got at the last minute.

Anyway, I will set them all for hatching on Sunday. Fingers crossed for a good hatch. Once I get some pipping I'll take the bator back to the school so HOPEFULLY the kids will get to see at least a couple of them hatch out.

Today is day 20.....

trying....not.....to.....obsess.....on.....those.....eggs......

Why oh why does my glass have to get all that condensation on there - i can't see a thing! I'm moving the web cam into the incubator later on today so I can see what's going on without opening the lid.

MUST...keep...busy.......

Silkielovr, if you can invent such a thing, you will be a millionare! Anyone selling hatching eggs would then be required to include the 'non-hatching-obsession' patch in the box with their eggs...

Of course, the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem....and since none of us seem to feel our chicken-hatching-aholism is a problem, that complicates our recovery!

Arlee, I'm the leader of my poultry group for 4H, and we're doing a hatching project soon. I'm used to dealing w/ older kids, like 8-10+, but we have quite a few younger kids, so I was wondering if you could send me those files that you used in the classroom? If so, that would be awesome. I know I share all the incubating/hatching process w/ my 4 yo little bro, and he loves it. Anyway, keep updating us! Let us know how that webcam works for you. Thank you!

Back from the school from the last visit.

Took two of the eggs that were 'on the verge' and one hatched in the car before I got there... the other was kind enough to wait and hatch for the kids. I made a temporary hatcher out of a plexiglass small animal container and a heating pad. It worked pretty well to hold the temp and humidity OK AND to let the kids see the baby hatch. They wouldn't have been able to see anything if I had taken the bator. They were able to see right in the container and watch the whole thing.

The teacher was glad I only brought TWO to hatch instead of the whole bunch - the kids were a bit excited, to say the least. LOL

I did show them my videos of the others hatching also.

What a fun project this has been! I encourage everyone out there to volunteer to do a hatching project at a local elementary school. I think I had as much fun as the kids! LOL

Thanks to Lisa for sharing her BR eggs for this project - they are going strong - only one hasn't hatched yet of hers.

I'll post a final tally once all have hatched...
