Clean coops

We used aspen shavings instead of pine, and I was really pleased. No strong smell from the shavings, and they controlled the less pelasant aromas very nicely. Not too dusty, nice big shavings. Meant to be for hamsters or bunnies but they sold it in big bags that weren't too expensive.
No the girls poop mainly in the dirt and we move the tractor every 10-14 days. They don't go in the little room upstairs yet. And mostly poop off the ledge in front of it.

HORSEWISHR, that sounds like an amazing coop!!!

You wouldn't happen to have a pix of it you could post here would you? I would LOVE to see it.

Our coop is just a shed and we put hay on the floor and it's so stinky and full of flies I want to wear a mask to clean it out!

Don't your chickens go into the coop at night? Mine do. Don't even round em up, they just go inside when it gets dusk. But their roost and nest boxes are in there, so everything is poopy!

I put those 12"x12" stick on linoleum tiles on the floor of our coop for easy clean out and to save the wood underneath, and I use straw it's an easy clean out - I think the run will be tougher once they have all the grass gone....

We put down linoleum too but it got wet a lot and finally began to crack and pull apart so we removed it. It was old linoleum too so new stuff might have worked better. But the chickens were slippin and sliddin on it all the time like it was ice!

Here are a few pictures.

The outside view (the chickens have about 1/3 of the house. the rest is the "garden center"). The litte red barn is the nest box. Accessible from outside for humans; inside for chickens.

Inside, showing the division between garden and chicken parts:

Inside, showing the nest box, feeder suspended with trailer tie, and waterer on brick pedestal. (The nest box is blocked with bricks because the girls aren't big enough to use it yet. We also haven't drilled the access holes to the outside yet. We will be putting on hinged doors so we can close it up at night.)

(It looks messy in there, but the biggest mess is all the feathers. The poop gets stirred up in the shavings and practically disappears.)

Roxie, coming in to see is she can get into the photo-shoot
