Clean Water Question

How important is clean water for grown chickens. They seem to muddy their drinking water every day. Any ideas?

Hi there, welcome to BYC! :frow

Let me clear this up for you a little... "clean" water is very confusing to some folks...

This is not in reference to dirt as we know it... and dirt in and of itself is NO issue what soever. Chickens ingest dirt on a regular basis when they eat bugs and it helps supply them with some grit.

Clean water is in reference to water that is free of harmful chemicals or waste products like animal or human waste or dead animals... also free of things like giardia and preferably not too much algae. If they are pooing in the water dish... then it's a problem. Otherwise, if your water dish ins't raised... please consider raising it to be level with their back. This helps some in avoiding debris getting kicked in from normal behaviors like flapping around or dirt bathing.

Hope this makes sense! Adding your general location to your profile can help folks make their best suggestions possible at a glance. ;)

You could try a nipple waterer. You have to be very careful though and check the nipples very often to make sure they are working. Have at least 3 of them so if one stops working the other ones will. Like @EggSighted4Life said, it's not a big deal if it's just dirt
