I got my Coturnix a 2 days ago and I already washed the waterer 17 times (yes I counted...). Does anyone know a better waterer design of something that will be clean for a longer amount of time? I don't like the idea of nipples, doesn't seem like they were made to drink from them... Any help is appreciated.

- for your feeder I assume you use one of those right angle PVC coupler. Can you please tell me what size is appropriate for quails? Did you use a 1 inch? 2 inches? I'm designing an auto feeder using similar concept but not sure what size PVC is right.

- Can you show a close up picture of your waterer?

Thanks. I just switch to a nipple on end of a water bottle upside down. The birds get clean water all day. I don't think I'll go back.

Yes, it's a 90 degree. For the jumbo brown coturnix quail I use a 1 1/2 inch (it has to be small enough so they can't get in past their "shoulders"), I shorten (cut) the inside part and cut several notches in it on the bottom to allow the feed to flow in a shallow layer. I also notch all around the port to seat a seal so I can keep the port from dislodging from the bottle. If you make one, be sure to secure the bottle so it can't tip over or use a large flat bottom container that your birds can't move around.

Can you post a picture of what the feeder looks like inside? Which way is the 90 turned? I haven't seen a design like this and I love it.

Sure. It turns downward into the bottle as you can see. You have to cut it so it's not too long, of course. Otherwise it's too far of a reach for the quail. If you feed your quail pelleted game-bird feed instead of crumbles, make the notches on the bottom higher. It takes some work to build, but once it's done it's less maintenance and wasted feed.

Thank you for the photos. I saw similar design for chickens and liked it but wasn't sure what size to get for quails. You've saved me a lot of time tinkering, especially with the bottom notch. Didn't know you needed it.

What type of nipple are you using for the waterer? I assume that red thing is a nipple but haven't seen that type before. My birds are drinking from the standard chicken nipples just fine, but I'm curious about your set up.

It's a horizontal nipple. Waaaaaaay better than the vertical. It's spring loaded so no dripping.

Thank you! I am going to try this today. I'm glad for the picture, I wouldn't have thought it would be able to move up through that big of a turn - mine probably would have all dumped out!

I have the watering cups now (also spring loaded) and they work great. I am still giving them both kinds of waterers but they don't even seem to notice when I change the old ones any more and they used to swarm it for clean water every day.
