I wash any of my really dirty eggs before I incubate them (it was a wet summer here, and I had ducks laying eggs outside in mud puddles
) - and I do it exactly the way katharinad described.
The water has to be hot, and you have to pat them dry - it's the rubbing that will remove all the waxy bloom from the egg. I haven't noticed any difference at all in the hatch-ability of washed versus non-washed eggs.
If it's her first clutch of eggs, she may just ignore them. Mine did. They kicked them around like hocky pucks. It took about 3 clutches before one of the hens became broody. You will know when this happens because she will make a nest and look like on big cramp and being a real witch.
Ducky PMS, and that for a month or more. Snappy and in a bad mood with the don't mess with me aptitude. Everyone needs to stay clear or else. Leg hickies are all to common.
