Nature puts a coating on the shell of the egg called a bloom. This bloom protects bacteria from getting thru the shell and in to the egg.
You can store your hatching eggs for up to a week without loosing hatchability. In A cool temperature, not in the refrigerator.
Put them in a egg carton pointy end down so the air bubble stays at the round end where the chick will be pipping. prop one end of the carton up on something and switch from end to end daily. This helps the yolk from adhearing to one side and keeps it centered.
If an egg is dirty you can take a small piece of sand paper and remove it. Washing and scrubbing with water and a toothbrush will remove the bloom..
Will washed eggs hatch? Sure they can, but you lower the percentage of success with the practice.

If you don't have any sandpaper, you can use a ScratchBrite pad. Either red or green works great for cleaning poo from eggs without losing the bloom. I usually only set naturally clean eggs myself, and only the largest most normal looking. No long skinny eggs, really small eggs, eggs that are nearly perfectly round or deformed eggs.
