I use ACV in the plastic waterers (don't use ACV in galvanized metal waterers, as it leaches out toxic minerals from the metal...), and it does wonders for keeping the slime at bay! I use it primarily for the chooks' health but that is an added bonus. '
Having said that, I still wash out the waterers on an as needed basis. If they are really grotty and I see evidence of poop, then I take them and use soap and water then refill. Once per day about mid-day if I'm home, I rinse and refill with fresh clean water. To clean them I use a washcloth or scrubby type pad as well. When I'm just rinsing, my finger swishes away any sand or feathers etc.
I clean my feeders the same way, except they seem to need less cleaning, so maybe once per week. If there's alot of poop, I wash them out completely with soap and water and a cloth. I never use bleach anywhere, don't even have it on hand. For a small flock (12) I can't justify having such a toxic substance around.
