Cleaning silkie crests

I have a couple silkie girls whose combs are simply hideous right now. The crest hairs are clumped together with dried mud. I'm about to give them baths but in the past I've never washed their heads and I'm not sure if this is a good idea. Any tips?

If the mud is dried, then won't it brush off if you rub the feathers gently between your fingers?

Or take a damp cloth, I wouldn't wash their heads like a shower.

No, it's stuck fast in clumps to the feathers.
