I’m less than a month away from picking up my chicks! I’ve got everything together, just wondered if there was anything I should keep in mind as I clean my new supplies and get them ready.

I’ve heard chicks can be pretty sensitive, so wanted to know the best way to clean everything as I get their brooder set up.

I’ll have 6 chicks in there, and I’m housing them in a large plastic tote, with a plastic feeder and waterer (that’s specifically what I’m planning to clean). Do I just go with basic soap and water, or should I be using a diluted bleach solution?

Any tips would be great, thank you!

When the chicks are actively using the stuff I just put my hose on the blast setting and blast all the poop off. I dont worry too much about sanitizing, but i also havent had any sick chicks, knock on wood. Between batches of chicks in the brooder everything got washed down with a diluted bleach solution and laid in the sun to dry.

For cleaning, use basic soap and water for the plastic tote, feeder, and waterer. If you want to sanitize, a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 9 parts water) works, but make sure to rinse everything thoroughly. Alternatively, a white vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 10 parts water) can be used for a final rinse. Ensure everything is completely dry before setting up the brooder. Also, check that the brooder is in a warm, draft-free spot and the bedding is clean and dry.
