cleaning styrofoam incubator

I need suggestions on how to clean a styrofoam incubator. My hatch rate was great last year but not so good this year. I'm afraid I'm cleaning it wrong or not getting it clean enough.

I use a 1/2 teasppon of bleach to 1 quart of water, I let it dry in the sun then give it a good rinse and redry in the sun. My bator is stryofoam to and 20 some years old. I have gotten good hatches out of it everytime, except one, but that was for poo covered eggs that exploded for days. Cleaned the same way and had 60 eggs set and almost all 60 eggs hatched.

I wash mine in the kitchen sink with clean dish water with a little bleach added to it. Then I rinse it well and make sure it dries completely before I use it again. I'm fairly new to this and have only had to wash mine a few times, but I have had no problems with this so far. It does not take long for an incubator to get stinky once chicks start hatching.

I like the idea of putting it out in the sun for airing, but that won't work here because we have so many trees and birds in the area that it would either get junk in it from the trees or a bird would poop on it. There's nothing like the good old sunshine to freshen things up.

I so agree with you. We are having so much rain here I'm glad my bators are in hatching progress now. But that does not help with my laundry. 5 kids that makes for alot of laundry. Up here we get a summer increase rate and my electric bill just about doubles. I love hanging clothes and everything outside.
