As requested bath time pics

.. All clean and smelling better now

.. I didnt bother drying them as the sun was out and they seemed to do a good enough job themselves

This bird is the one in the worse condition, and it dont help that she is at the bottom of the pecking order, Ive put her in her own cage so she can eat properly without stress from the others.

All preening themselves.. they must feel better now

One thing i did notice, After bathing them the pic skin that is on show has turned white, It dosent look half as sore as it did. I hope that is a good thing

I'm sure they are so much happier now. You are wonderful for giving them a better life. It sickens me to think of how commercial hens are treated.

Me too, Its shocking and in a way amazing to see them turning back into a "normal" chicken, Some of the things they dont know is quite shocking, They have more or less had to re learn how to eat and scratch, Things that "normal" chickens would take for granted ..

My efforts have been rewarded in the only way the can though.. I received 3 eggs off the 6 today

That's so nice of you! Where did you get the battery chickens? I want to build another coop and if I can save some chickens from a horrible life I would do it in an instant.

Be prepared though. they come with problems. mine had scaley leg and lice. missing all kinds of feathers, bent beaks( must have not been fed properly or had to eat through a cage!.. i bought a lot of them- fil took 21 i kept the rest, for a while.. permanently kept three, rehomed all the rest-- at the last rehoming there were finally only 2 ground dwellers.. they didnt know how to roost!!!! god it was bad having 29 chickens on the floor of the coops every night!!!! but all is better now, exxcept the lice.. which im still battling.

btw more often than not even on this board most batts tend to be red stars.. i wonder why?? beside they are the production birds.

A am a little late to this. But the original Dawn dish soap is used by Animal rescue groups for animals of all ages. It cuts through oil, it kills fleas (maybe your lice problem) and can be safely used on very young animals.

I inadvertently rescued a 4 day old kitten when I found a 4 week old Lab on the side of the road. Called a rescue group and they told me to use Dawn on them both, immediately. Daily if need be. They were both covered in fleas and did have to be bathed twice. I brought them in for evaluation a few days later and they were flealess and healthier, so they started looking for homes for both.

Wild birds and mammals rescued from oil spills are bathed in Dawn, also to clean them up before releasing them.

My human girls and I watched a great British documentary called "The Private Life of Chickens". It focused on a woman that rescued battery chickens and then re-homed them. It was disgusting to see how they are kept inside ( never see daylight ) in tiny cages filled with hundred of others. After 18 months the chickens are retired from egg laying and she rescues them from being put down. The rescued chickens did regain their natural chicken instincts. Now my oldest daughter said she would like to be a rescuer also.

I watched that too, Thought it was a great doc, If i had more room i would definitely take in more, The 6 I have over the 3-4 days I have had them have come on no end, Not only do they now smell and look clean they seem to be showing there personalities more and laying for me,

I would definitely recommend adopting these chickens if you can deal with the state of them when you get them, All they need is a bit of TLC and Im sure they will turn out to be fantastic birds,
