cleaning the duck pond

I bought a kidney shaped pond today about maybe 50 gallons, to put partly in the ground for my ducks. I have four. Three runners and one cayuga.
I won't be able to dump it, as it will be in the ground, so I am wondering about using a siphon thing that I have here to drain it, but not sure how much gunk will be in the bottom to clean out. I am new to ducks. Please tell me all your ideas and suggestions.
They are going to be fenced in a 4 x 8 area with the pond and their shelter. Bird netting over head. I just want to make the pool as manegable as possible. Thanks.

We use a pond pump, set in a plastic open weave basket so that big chunks don't clog it. We run the hose on the pump to the garden. It is great fertilizer water!

Once the pond is empty enough, we can turn and dump out the bottom gunk and hose it out. You can use a dust pan or something to shovel out what's left in the bottom.

I like that idea but is the fertilizer too fresh? Chicken poop has to be old to put in a garden or it will burn the plants.
How often do you pump it out?

It is so diluted from the water that it won't burn anything. And if it is a few days between refillings, it starts to decompose faster.

Refilling for us depends on how dirty it gets. Duck's water doesn't have to be clear, but should be free of algae growing on top and should clear up when the dirt settles.
We refill ours anywhere from once a day to once a week.

Perfect! I just looked up some pumps on Amazon. Now to figure out which one is best. This is what I wanted to do with the water as I have two large raised beds near by. :)

terreilacy, Can you give us more details about the pond pump you use? Brand, size, type, photo, etc? We have wasted a lot of money trying to come up with pumps and/or filters that works and so far, nothing has worked except dumping it everyday...
