ok I hate to put the buggy in front of the horse but my hen is dying. I did see a lice on her head and only one. but that is not my question. when I clean up the tub after she is gone what should I use to disinfect and possible kill anything that jumped ship when she dies? please don't be mean I tried all I could for her. vet I spoke to said she is dying from old age things.

Lysol spray or a bleach solution should be adequate. Sorry that you are having to deal with this.
thank you for all the great answers. I will definitely de lice all my chickens I have dm coming and am gonna get some wood ashes to put inside their pen after I clean it all out. what is the best way to de lice chicken for you that have done it. my chickens are not the pick up and hold type. my rooster has some pretty mean looking spurs on him

First, I'd give her a merciful exit instead of letting her suffer a lingering death. Then, you can bleach your tub. You will have to treat all of your birds with permethrin, strip the coop out completely, destroy the litter, wash coop, treat the coop with permethrin, paying particular attention to the cracks where perches meet wall, and nest boxes. Then, you will need to repeat the entire process again in a week to 10 days. You need to identify the parasite your birds have, whether it is lice or mites. You can do a google search for pictures.

i would not use DE if you have an infestation
you need permethrin dust/spray
i would get both, remove all bedding spray the coop/roosts/all nooks n crannies
and dust the birds (think shake n bake) make sure to really get them good

BUT if you can wear a mask (like you would find at a doctors office) and dont do it in a close room, do it outside

my buff girl Cheryl died this afternoon. so I gave her a proper burial and the first good day we have when the other 3 are out I will dust their pen and take out all the hay in their and all the food and water and clean up real good. not sure how I can dust the chickens tho. the rooster is a big bugger and hard to handle. thank you all again for all the great help and support. I said a prayer for the lord to take her today so I wouldn't have to do it myself.

I don't like chasing them I take em off the roost at night!

Agreed. Wait till dark, then you can go out and dust the birds. If you have a helper, that will make the job go much easier. When I did it, I placed the bird in a dish pan on her back, and used a nylon stocking full of dust, and used it like a powder puff to get the dust down to her skin, focusing on under wings, back of neck, and vent areas. Wear a mask to protect your lungs, and wear rubber gloves, long sleeves to minimize contact with the permethrin.

Spurs on a roo are intimidating, but if you handle him after dark, you have little to fear.

A head lamp is a wonderful tool to have, especially if it has a red lamp.
