Will clipping the flight feathers keep them off my neighbor's fence (5 ft chain link fence ) and out of the mouths of his great danes?

thanks

Maybe - it depends on the breed(s) and age. Younger/lighter weight birds and some breeds can easily "hop" that high or higher. I used to big, heavy buckeyes - very laid back and non-flighty that could easily "hop" over our 6 ft privacy fence and I usually found them "roosting" on top of the 6ft tall coop at night - nightly ritual of getting them down and inside... and yes, their wings were kept clippedMost of my birds as juveniles could "hop" up to 5ft. even with clipped wings

So far its just one young (this year) araucana.

I am new here. What keeps them from just flying to the top of the hardware cloth?

Motivation? I really have no idea why some do and some don't. Personally, my Ameraucana's and EEs were the best flyers and the "most motivated'. Like I mentioned above about the buckeyes, they seemed more in interested in roosting up high but not "exploring" like the AMs and EEs. I have tried to stick to heavier dual purpose breeds to reduce the flying potential since I live in the middle of town. Had a wyandotte that also never matured out of flying over fences (and was just an all around PITA)

I have re-homed all of my "flight risks" over the years except for my 3 y/o EE. At 3 y/o, I can put her in an unused garden to work the soil with 3 ft fence and she stays put with the other girls just fine
