clipping wings??

Before I clipped them, they could fly to the top of a large tree. Now, they can't fly as high as before, but they can still fly enough to get over a 5 foot fence. Why do you clip only one side?

A local chicken farmer told me to clip both wings.

Your only supposed to clip one side as when they try to fly they are off balance, if you do both sides they are usually balanced enough to fly a little.
