I have Plymouth barred rocks. They are flying out of my pen. I didn't want to clip their wings but I'm going to have too. I watched a video and the lady said the center of the feathers should be white or clear. If they had color they still have blood in them. I was wondering if that was true for my breed. I was also wondering if they will ever get heavy enough that they cannot fly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a variety of breeds including BRs-they rarely fly, Are yours still young? How high is your fence? The only time I had issues was when they were young. My fence is aprox 4 feet high and what I have done is put bird netting over the top (for protection from predators) and this works well. I would be hesitant in clipping their wings IMHO

I am thinking that as they continue to put on weight, that will make it more difficult for them to fly out. I would also check into putting bird netting over the run. This prevents them from getting out and predators from getting in. Good luck!

Ok thanks. I may to try and cover the run they are in now. My plan for the future is to let them run my back yard and its a 1/2 acre. Thanks again.

Thats exactly what I do! They have a covered run aprox. 20 ft x 40 ft during the day, but as soon as I get home from work/on the weekends (When I can keep my eyes on them) they are out to roam our 40 acres. Best of both worlds!
