My husband saw a listing on Craigslist for 8 FREE chickens. Naturally we jumped at the chance to see about expanding our flock. I sent a text to which I received no answer. So, hubby calls; only to find out that the posting was a prank by the guy's basketball teammates. Man, was I let down. Same feeling I got when I stepped on the scale and saw that I gained instead of lost. Bummer!

I'm sorry to hear that.

Do you have chickens yet?
Yes, we have 9. Though, 8 more would have been a great addition to the family. We will expand our flock some day. Seeing the ad, and looking at the picture of the 8 fabulously, feathered ladies has confirmed the idea of having more. I love watching baby chicks grow, I just don't have the patience to wait for the eggs. :-/ I'd love to get a Seebright (sp?), a Silver Laced Polish, and a Spitzhauben (sp?). Though, these were free, and beggers can't be chosers. lol

I've never had Polishes or Spitzhaubens, but I do have a Sebright. I use to have two, a rooster named Sebbie and a hen named Beauty, but Sebbie was too mean, so we got rid of him. However, Beauty, having been raised with the top rooster, is pretty high in the pecking order for her small size and lays some nice, granted pretty small, eggs. She is beautiful.
Right now she is broody, and she's due in just a couple days! I'm so excited!

This is broody Beauty, on her nest box. Because she is smaller than almost all the other hens, the tiny opening in the wire is for her to get in and out but prevent the other hens getting onto her nest.

What breeds do you have right now?

I love her! She is so pretty! I have 6 RIRs, 2 EEs, and a Silie, that I am pretty sure is a blue. I googled her because I was given her at 5-6 weeks by a woman who raises chickens. She's not a breeder, just a chicken lover, like me.

I have three Rhode Island Reds, 1 Easter Egger, and 3 Silkies right now, along with a lot of other breeds. I really want to get a Black Australorp and a Black Star, as I hear they are some of the best backyard breeds there are!
I just got 17 new breeds/colors of chickens to add to my flock, and I can't wait to see how they turn out as they grow up!

A New Hampshire Red named Smaug

A white silkie named Fred (he is no longer with us, unfortunately)

My new Dorking chick, Sedgewick

Ocean, what I assume is half Barnvelder because of her shape and patterning

Dominator, my top rooster (a barred rock) with his girl, Liberty

Our former rooster, Silver, and some of our Rhode Island Reds. Due to the poor economy, among other things, we got rid of these guys and gave them to a friend before we acquired new chickens a few years later

I love the pictures! I'd love to have dozens more chickens. Our county requires us to only have 8. We can't have roosters. We have 9, so we are pushing our luck. My hubby says wer should get more, but I'm not interested in getting attached to them only to be forced to give them up.

Chicken math, its what makes us get more birds even when we don't have the space.

We are suppose to have at most 30 (since we don't have that much money) and right now we have something like 60.
